Realtek Releases ALC885 Lossless Audio Codecs













Realtek has released a new high definition audio codec aimed at providing lossless audio with content protection for DVD, Blu-ray and HD DVD discs. The ALC885 features 7.1 +2 High Definition Audio with a 106dB DAC SNR and a 101dB ADC SNR and it can perform lossless audio streaming at 96kHz/24 bit or higher. The ALC885 is the latest in a long list of HD codecs like the ALC861, ALC880(D), ALC882, ALC883 and the 2-channel ALC260 and 262. This new codec has reportedly shown up on two motherboards in Asia and I would bet with Realtek's extensive partnerships we will be seeing much more of this codec in the near future.

I believe one of them is the Biostar I945P-A7 but it seems to be just speculation at this point. It is labeled as the 882 instead of the 885. I will check some of my sources anmd see what I can find. If you come across any info let us know.

I think I found exactly the same Biostar when I was Googling around some time ago, trying to find any references to the ALC885. Unfortunately, I think it's an error to have 885 named on those few pages as being the audio codec of that mobo, in reality (at least according to Biostart's site) it is 882, as you already mentioned.

But, let's keep digging and post the results here, ok? I have the feeling that whatever mobo will feature the 885 as the audio codec of choice, will also be a one of the very first mobos to actually be a safe bet, if one's building a system for distribution and/or playback of highdef, protected audio and video. This (the codec) is one of few products to actually state that it's meant for those applications. Combine the codec with a mobo which would have integrated graphics with HDCP-encrypted HDMI-out, and we're getting close to what I'd like to see. Especially if the graphics would be H.264 accelerated. Or, alternatively, a mobo which would have a protected path to discrete, HDCP-HDMI-equipped PCI-Express -graphics.

I'm afraid too many of the systems built from the current products will fall short of the requirements (set by the content owners) in way or another.

Another interesting question: do you happen to know how will the audio data for HDMI-out- equipped, discrete PCI-Express-graphics cards

be delivered? Will it go through PCI-Express or via the S/PDIF-in -connector that those cards seem to have? I would guess that PCI-Express is the only wide-enough path to deliver hi-def, encrypted/protected content to the card, any content input delivered via S/PDIF would have to be downsampled/-graded first in order to fullfill the requirements by the content owners and in order to fit into the bandwidth of S/PDIF. But I have no idea will HDCP allow this or how are they planning to do it?

I Just bought a HP Pavillion a1640n Core2duo cpu, I found out it's using this ALC885 codec, It has an ASUS Buckeye motherboard in it. I was going to put a SB X-FI in it but after looking at the specs I think I'll hold off..
